You would think that the thousands of black and white photos we've seen from the era would give us an idea, but these photos change everything - they bring the era into much sharper focus.

It is striking how different some things were - but even more striking is how much is the same. As you scroll through these, you’ll find yourself thinking “these pictures aren’t that old...” try to remember that the earliest of these photos were taken during The Great Depression.
